Saturday, July 8th, 1944 City Box #516 was transmitted at 0216 hours for 170 South Common Street. Response was Engines 1, 6, 4; Ladders 2 & 3; the Rescue Company; and the West Lynn District Chief. Upon arrival, units found a two and a half story, third class building, with a fire on the dormer roof of a second floor window. A quick attack with an Indian can and the fire was knocked down. Damage was slight. The cause? A 38-year-old female set papers afire and threw them out the window. She thought an electric ray machine was being beamed at her from the nearby General Electric plant. She was removed to the hospital by the police for observation. Companies to quarters on the recall at 0228, absent from quarters 12 minutes.
