At 1842 Hours on Thursday February 9th, 1956 City Box #461 Union Street corner of Silsbee Street was struck for a fire in the building at 240-244 Union Street. The fire involved three businesses, Maxine's Dress Shop, Bermans Hosiery and Young's Specialty Shop. The fire originated in the cellar of Maxine's Dress Shop and a heavy smoke condition made fire fighting difficult. Companies battled the blaze for more than an hour. The Rescue Company for example used three All-Service Masks and two Scott Air-Pacs for 20 minutes also stretching four portable flood lights for illumination. The dress shop was gutted with heavy smoke damage to the other businesses. The cost of the fire damage was estimated to be several thousand dollars. This block had been the scene of a spectacular fire the previous year. The Recall was sounded at 1949 Hours. However the nights work wasn't finished.
